Gene “Coach” Haynes of Greenwood, IN died on July 8, 2011 at Community Hospital South. He was born on January 7, 1930 in Shady Grove, TN, the youngest son of Raymond and Amanda (Moore) Haynes. They precede him in death.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years Cara Nita (Winn) Haynes, his three children Mike (Joy) Haynes of Roswell, GA, Rob (Jacque) Haynes of Greenwood and Lana Parker of Whiteland, IN; a brother Rudy (Diane) Haynes of Charlotte, NC and 5 grandchildren Bryan Haynes, Katie Haynes, Kayla Haynes, Shelbi Parker and Kevin Parker.
He is preceded in death by 6 brothers, one sister and a son-in-law Kent Parker.
He played varsity basketball at New Castle High School in New Castle, IN, 4 years of College level ball at Western New Mexico University (under a full scholarship), and on the All-Army Basketball team based at Fort Lewis in Washington State from 1953 thru 1954.
Gene was a teacher for 35 years at various schools including Mt Summit High School, Blue River Valley High School, and New Castle High School in Henry County, IN. He finished his career by teaching 15 years at the Greenwood School Corporation. His real passion was coaching basketball. He was the head basketball coach at Mt Summit in the 1960’s which became Blue River Valley. In the 1964-1965 season he led Blue River to a 21-0 regular season (which was the school’s best record for over 40 years). He coached 8th grade basketball in New Castle for over 10 years until 1974 when he took the Greenwood High School head coaching position. He won close to 200 varsity games during his career as a head coach and in 2009 he was inducted into the Western New Mexico University Hall of Fame as a player.
He was an accomplished golfer who played almost everyday in his later years. He was a 20-year member at Royal Oak Country Club (now Dye’s Walk) in Greenwood. He was also a charter member at Valle Vista CC in Greenwood.
One of Gene’s most treasured experiences was making a cameo appearance in the movie “Hoosiers” as a coach of an opposing team. He never tired of describing how he uttered the now famous line “Time Out” as Gene Hackman looked on.
Gene was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge in Greenwood, the Elks Lodge in Franklin, IN and the Eagles Lodge in New Castle.
Visitation will be on Tuesday evening, July 12, from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. Greenwood. The funeral will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 13, at 11:30 A.M. Pastor Charlie Cash will officiate. Burial will be private.
